Spartan Youth Jazz Orchestra

Spartan Youth Jazz Orchestra (SYJO) provides an opportunity for young musicians to learn and perform music in the Big Band setting and provides quality music education through fun and unique learning techniques. SYJO rehearses on Mondays from 5:30-7 p.m. Led by acclaimed jazz artist and educator Sean Dobbins, this band expands access to high-level jazz education for metro area youth. Performances take place at renowned jazz venues such as the Music Hall Jazz Café.

SYJO is for middle school students with one or more years’ playing experience on their instrument. The ensemble is also open to non-traditional jazz instruments including, but not limited to tuba, French horn and strings.

Curriculum includes:

  • Major, Minor, and Blues Scales
  • Instrumental Techniques
  • Ensemble Playing
  • Beginning Improvisation
  • Beginning Jazz Repertoire

Instrumentation: saxophone (5), trumpet (4), trombone (4), drumset, guitar and piano.

Applicants should send a brief audition video (phone video) to show skill level to cmsd@msu.edu. We are now accepting audition videos for the Fall 2018 semester!
