Zhao (Lia) Wang (Piano)

Pianist Zhao (Lia) Wang was born in Guiyang, China and displayed musical talent from an early age. Ms. Wang received the first piano lesson at the age of 3 and gave her solo piano debut in the Guiyang Piano Festival and Competition the following year. She started her professional music study at the Affiliated Music School of Shanghai Conservatory since age 10, and later on received B.M. and M.M. with distinction in Piano Performance from Eastman School of Music, a Performance Diploma in Piano Performance from Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Her principal teachers include Prof. Nelita True, Prof. Boris Slutsky, Prof. Hung-Kuan Chen, Prof. Chen Jiang, Prof. Jianzhong Wang, and Prof. Chongfang Zhang. Currently, she is completing a doctorate in Piano Performance with Prof. Deborah Moriarty, a masters in Piano Pedagogy with Dr. Derek Polischuk, and a masters in Collaborative Piano with Dr. Zhihua Tang at Michigan State University.

Ms. Wang received awards and scholarships including a special scholarship awarded by the city of Shanghai, Howard Hanson Scholarship at Eastman School of Music, awards of excellence in chamber music at Peabody Institute, Ralph Votapek Scholarship and Verdehr Scholarship at Michigan State University, and won the Honor's Competition at Michigan State University. She participated in master classes by Leon Fleisher, Russell Sherman, Malcolm Bilson, Barry Douglas, Bernd Goetzke, John Perry, Fou Tsong, and many other respected teachers and musicians, from whom she received many positive comments on her energetic and sensitive playing.

Ms. Wang is a dedicated teacher and an avid soloist and chamber pianist. She has presented with her colleagues representing Michigan State University at 2016 MMTA conference Midland MI and 2017 MTNA in Baltimore MD, and has joined the piano faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp since 2016. Her concert performances have taken place throughout cities in Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, the U.S., Japan, Thailand, and China. Ms. Wang has performed in concert series presented by Guiyang Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, as well as Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. She has collaborated in concerts and recordings with members from major orchestras including Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, and with faculties from the Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, Northwestern University, Peabody Institute, and Michigan State University, among others. Her music festival appearances include Bowdoin, Banff, Boston, Washington D. C., among many others.
