Spartan Youth Jazz Orchestra

Spartan Youth Jazz Orchestra (SYJO) provides an opportunity for young musicians to learn and perform music in a Big Band setting. This program offers high-quality music education through fun and innovative learning techniques. Youth rehearse weekly from 5:30-7 p.m.

SYJO is for middle school students with one or more years’ playing experience on their instrument. The ensemble is also open to non-traditional jazz instruments including, but not limited to tuba, French horn and strings.

Curriculum includes:

  • Major, Minor, and Blues Scales
  • Instrumental Techniques
  • Ensemble Playing
  • Beginning Improvisation
  • Beginning Jazz Repertoire

Instrumentation: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drumset, guitar and piano. Non-traditional jazz instruments are also welcome.
