Joshua McNiven

Tuba/Euphonium

Dr. Joshua McNiven is an active performer and educator in the East Lansing area. Along with his current appointment as Adjunct Instructor of Tuba/Euphonium at Alma College, Joshua performs with local ensembles such as Capital City Brass Band and Mason Symphony Orchestra on an as-needed basis on euphonium, baritone, trombone, and tuba and maintains a private studio.

Originally from Central Florida, Joshua earned his bachelor’s degree in music performance from Florida Southern College and his master’s degree in music performance from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, Wales, UK. While in Cardiff he performed with the RWCMD Brass Band, RWCMD Wind Band, City of Cardiff Brass Band and Llwydcoed Brass Band. With City of Cardiff Brass Band he competed at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at Royal Albert Hall in 2018 and competed in several regional/national competitions with Llwydcoed Brass Band in 2019. After returning to Central Florida in 2019, he performed regularly with the Florida Wind Band, Sarasota Concert Band, and Tampa Brass Band.

Joshua moved to East Lansing in 2021 to pursue his doctoral work at Michigan State University. In 2024, he graduated with his doctorate degree in music performance and master’s degree in music theory after serving three years as Philip Sinder’s graduate assistant. During that time he taught the Low Brass Methods course and several courses in music theory and in performance was a finalist for the MSU Concerto Competition in 2023 as well as a semi-finalist at the Jeju International Brass Competition in Jeju, South Korea in 2022. His former professors include Philip Sinder, Dr. David Childs, Dr. Robert Childs, Lawrence Burke, and Dr. Brian Brink.
