Philip Mitchell

Trombone

Born and raised in Flint ,Philip Mitchell is a pure Michigan trombonist and teacher, currently pursuing a D.M.A. in trombone performance and an M.M. in music theory from Michigan State University.  He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan – Flint and a Master’s degree from Michigan State University.  His primary teachers include Ava Ordman, Lois Alexander, and James Layfield, and he has played for master classes featuring Joseph Alessi, Ralph Sauer, Randall Hawes, and Brad Edwards.

As a soloist, he has performed with the Washtenaw Community Concert Band, appeared in the Flint Institute of Music’s “Seeing Stars!” benefit concert, and, twice, won the honor of performing with the University of Michigan – Flint’s Wind Symphony in 2011 and 2012.

In addition to his solo endeavors, Philip has performed with the Holland (MI) Symphony Orchestra and Mason Symphony Orchestra.  As a member of the University of Michigan – Flint’s own Tré Bone, he premiered music of Christian Manen, 1961 Prix de Rome winner.

Philip has taught lessons and led sectionals at local high schools.  He has also assisted the UM-Flint Summer Band Academy, the Spartan Youth Wind Symphony, and Michigan State University’s Community Music School, where he led master classes, sectionals, and private lessons.
