Geunyoung Kim is a violin instructor at CMS. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, a Master’s degree, and a Performance Diploma in Violin Performance from Michigan State University, where she studied with Professor I-Fu Wang. Prior to that, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from Dankook University in South Korea.
Geunyoung emphasizes proper posture, bow hold, and strong foundational technique in her violin lessons, helping beginning students build a solid base. Her teaching philosophy centers on making music enjoyable while supporting each student’s individual pace of growth and performance development.
During her time as an MSU String Fellow (2022–2023), she strengthened her teaching approach through dedicated observation in both individual and group lessons. She also provided string coaching at various schools and educational programs across Michigan, gaining valuable experience working with students of different ages and skill levels. To continue strengthening her foundation as a teacher, she is currently enrolled in the Teachers of Tomorrow certification program and completed the Suzuki Every Child Can! (ECC!) course in 2024, gaining a deeper understanding of how students learn and develop.
Geunyoung is currently the concertmaster of the Lapeer Symphony Orchestra and a violinist with the Midland Symphony Orchestra, continuing to grow her career as a performer. She also teaches music for grades K–10 at St. Paul Catholic School and Spring Vale Christian School.
