The CMS Children’s Choir is for students in 2nd – 5th grade who are ready for the focus, challenge and excitement of singing in a choir. The ensemble rehearses once a week for 60 minutes and performs each semester. Students learn the basic skills of singing, posture, etiquette, and discipline in the choral rehearsal, blended with exploration of children’s singing cultures around the world, including games. Students will also work on choral singing skills, including breath management, healthy vocal production, blend, and balance. Students will be expected to practice at home and participate with focus in rehearsals.
CMS Singers is for treble-voiced students in 5th – 9th grade. This ensemble rehearses once a week for 1.5 hours and performs each semester. The focused and dedicated singers of CMS Singers refine their aural and music literacy skills while further developing their skills as independent musicians, expressive artists, and musical ambassadors. Students study fundamental singing techniques focusing on tone quality, intonation, ear training, and music literacy. Additionally, students explore the enjoyment of singing with musicality, movement and expression. Singers learn and perform appropriately advanced repertoire from various styles and time periods in a fun, yet focused environment.
CMS A Cappella is a new experience for singers 14 – 18 years old, with the goal of building vocal musicianship in the context of today’s popular music. Students will gain exposure to the style of contemporary a cappella (as made famous in the movie Pitch Perfect), applying aural skills and vocal techniques to genres such as pop/rock, R&B, alternative, and more. CMS A Cappella groups will rehearse weekly, learning a varied repertoire and exploring skills unique to contemporary a cappella, such as vocal percussion, microphone technique, stage presence, improvisation, and arranging. Each semester will provide a high-energy and engaged musical environment, and culminate in a live performance.
